Abnormal Advocates for AI-Native Cybersecurity in Response to OSTP RFI on AI Strategy

Abnormal urges adoption of AI-native cybersecurity in response to OSTP’s RFI, highlighting the need for public-private collaboration to counter AI-powered threats.
March 27, 2025

At Abnormal, we are proud of the work that we do every day to protect organizations against advanced threats using AI. And as we continue to expand our AI-native capabilities beyond the commercial sector and into the public sector, we are also growing our scope of protection across national security and the broader civilization in which we reside.

The United States is at a pivotal moment in the advancement and application of AI. While the nation remains a global leader in AI innovation, it faces growing competition from strategic rivals, while also confronting a rapidly shifting threat landscape. Attackers are now leveraging AI to develop capabilities that were once limited to well-funded nation-state actors, enabling them to launch more sophisticated, targeted, and larger-scale attacks at unprecedented speed.

A New Era of Cyber Defense Begins With AI

The increasing use of AI in cyberattack methodologies necessitates a parallel evolution in defensive capabilities, focusing on the adoption of AI-native cybersecurity. We firmly believe that this is what will enable the federal government to innovate at the pace of adversaries.

As part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to strengthen U.S. leadership in AI, we submitted our response to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Request for Information (RFI). This response contributes to the development of an AI Action Plan aimed at defining priority policy actions to enhance America's position as an AI powerhouse.

Our recommendations, summarized below, emphasize the importance of proactive defensive measures against AI-enabled cyber threats, including investments in AI-driven security infrastructure and cross-sector collaboration.

What We Propose

  • Investing in AI-Native Cybersecurity: We emphasize the need for AI-native cybersecurity solutions to detect and neutralize AI-generated threats in real time. AI-native platforms, designed with AI at their core, offer a more robust, adaptable, and effective defense against evolving cyber threats.

  • Establishing a Federal AI Security Task Force: We recommend creating a task force of interdisciplinary professionals with technical AI and cybersecurity expertise to analyze the security vulnerabilities of government networks and systems. This task force can better assess and counteract offensive AI threats, integrating expertise from the private sector and intelligence agencies.

  • Increasing AI-Driven Threat Intelligence and Information Sharing: AI-powered attacks primarily target humans, often bypassing traditional cybersecurity defenses through social engineering tactics. To facilitate early threat detection and mitigation, the federal government should strengthen intelligence-sharing mechanisms between private cybersecurity firms and national security agencies.

Cybersecurity is a cornerstone of national security, and the rise of AI-driven threats demands a proactive and adaptive response. The U.S. government must take decisive action to harness AI’s defensive potential, ensuring that AI strengthens, rather than undermines, American security and economic resilience.

Stronger Together With AI-Native Protection

Abnormal remains committed to supporting OSTP and other federal agencies in shaping an AI strategy that protects businesses, government entities, and critical infrastructure from the next generation of cyber threats. By embracing AI-native cybersecurity, fostering public-private collaboration, and advancing threat intelligence, we can ensure a safer, more resilient digital future.
