Vibe Hacking and AI-Enabled Threats: Lessons from Anthropic’s Report

Recent findings from Anthropic reveal how cybercriminals are leveraging generative AI not just as a tool, but as an operational force multiplier, enabling lone actors to conduct sophisticated attacks previously beyond their capabilities. From automated data extortion campaigns to North Korean operatives using AI to maintain fake employment at tech companies, the threat has evolved.

Anthropic’s report highlights an alarming new trend in cybercrime. AI is no longer just helping adversaries craft more effective phishing emails or malware snippets. In one campaign, a single attacker utilized Claude Code to conduct a large-scale data extortion operation targeting multiple international entities within a matter of weeks. By exploiting Claude’s code execution environment, the adversary was able to automate reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and network penetration. At least 17 organizations—including government agencies, healthcare providers, and financial institutions—were targeted, with ransom demands in some cases exceeding half a million dollars.

Security researchers have described this new tactic—using coding agents to actively execute operations on target networks—as “vibe hacking,” and it represents a fundamental shift in how cybercriminals can accelerate and expand their operations.

Lowering the Barrier to Entry

Cybercriminals with limited technical expertise are also leveraging generative AI to simulate skills they don’t actually possess.

North Korean IT operatives, for instance, systematically used Claude to secure and maintain remote employment positions at technology companies. To be clear, this was not merely another iteration of known IT worker schemes. Rather, as Anthropic explained, it represents a “transformation enabled by artificial intelligence that removes traditional operational constraints. Operators who previously required extensive technical training can now simulate professional competence through AI assistance.”

The findings demonstrate how AI disrupts the traditional correlation between attacker sophistication and attack complexity. With models like Claude providing instant technical depth, even threat actors with limited training can now execute advanced, high-impact campaigns.

What This Means for Defenders

Anthropic’s findings highlight an uncomfortable truth: commercially available AI tools, even those designed with safeguards, can be abused to power cybercrime at scale. Given this potential for misuse, security leaders are justified in weighing the privacy and access trade-offs when it comes to AI adoption within their organizations.
