From Abnormal Security to Abnormal AI: Embracing Who We’ve Always Been

Discover why Abnormal Security is rebranding to Abnormal AI as the company continues its mission to protect humans from cybercrime.
April 16, 2025

Seven years ago, when Sanjay and I started this company, we didn’t have customers, or a product, or even a website. What we did have was a background in AI, a vision for a behavioral modeling platform, and a hypothesis that detecting abnormal behavior could help uniquely stop crime. That combination became the foundation for a company we originally called Abnormal AI.

Back then though, the world wasn’t quite ready for a company with AI in the name. People heard “AI” and immediately thought of a world of science fiction disconnected from practical applied technology. So instead, to give us the opportunity to prove ourselves (and frankly, to be taken seriously by the market), we made the decision to change our name to Abnormal Security.

That was the right decision at the time. But today, the world has changed. AI is no longer hypothetical—its capabilities are widely understood and it’s already transforming every industry. As adoption accelerates, attackers and defenders alike are using AI—fundamentally changing both how threats are launched and how they must be stopped.

We’ve always believed in the power of AI to protect humans from cybercrime. In fact, as AI attacks become more mainstream, we believe that it will be the only way to protect people. AI will no longer be a nice-to-have or a pretty add-on to a cybersecurity product… it will be an absolute necessity—the only way that the products will be effective.

And because we believe so strongly in this, we’re going back to the name that started it all. Starting today, Abnormal Security is reverting back to Abnormal AI. This name better reflects who we are, what we’ve always believed, and where we’re going. But more importantly, it reflects the growing urgency of the world we live in—one where artificial intelligence is both our greatest tool and our greatest threat.

AI Is Changing Everything—Including Cybercrime

AI has moved from novelty to necessity. It’s not just helping us write emails or summarize meetings—it’s powering synthetic identities, automating phishing attacks, and crafting social engineering messages at a massive scale. What once took hours of manual effort now takes seconds. And the impact is massive.

Cybercriminals are moving faster, scaling wider, and targeting our greatest vulnerability: our people. At Abnormal, we were founded to address exactly this. From day one, we’ve used AI to understand human behavior—detecting anomalies and stopping attacks before they happen. But now, we’re expanding that foundation, building the Abnormal Behavior Platform to protect people across the cloud. Because it’s not just email that’s at risk—it’s the entire digital workplace.

Why Human Security Will Define the Next Era

When people think of cybersecurity, they often think of endpoints, firewalls, and infrastructure. But nearly 70% of breaches involve a human doing something they shouldn’t, something like clicking a link, approving a payment, or sharing credentials.

Humans have always been the weakest link… AI only magnifies that weakness. That’s why the future of cybersecurity isn’t just about protecting systems. It’s about protecting people. And we believe Abnormal is uniquely positioned to lead this category.

We started with email because it’s the highest-volume, highest-risk communication channel in the enterprise. But it’s also the richest source of behavioral data. Every integration deepens our understanding of human behavior, which fuels our platform—and positions us to protect people across every cloud application they use. We’re not pivoting away from email. We’re building on it. Email is the foundation for everything that comes next.

Here’s how we think about it:

  • We’ve been AI-native from day one. Our platform isn’t retrofitted with AI. It’s built entirely on it, which is exactly why it works so well.

  • We’re focused on behavioral intelligence. We don’t just block threats—we understand human behavior. And that understanding powers everything we do, and every attack we stop.

  • Our customers are our top priority. We move fast, we solve hard problems, and we care deeply about the people we protect. That’s how we win.

This combination has helped us grow faster than almost any other cybersecurity company in history. Today, more than 20% of the Fortune 500 have chosen Abnormal to protect their people. We’re trusted to make millions of autonomous decisions per day—without human review. We've already stopped nearly $1 billion in fraud. And we’re just getting started.

Why the World Needs Abnormal AI

There’s a lot of hype around AI right now. But there’s also a lot of fear. And rightfully so—this technology is moving faster than most of us can comprehend. The real question isn’t whether AI will shape the future. The real question is how AI will shape the future.

We believe enterprises need a trusted, dependable partner. One that doesn’t just use AI, but understands it. One that’s not just fast, but accurate. One that doesn't just react, but anticipates. That’s what we’re building at Abnormal and to show that, we need a name that reflects the future.

This is a brand update, but it isn’t just a brand update. It’s a signal of our intent.

We’re returning to Abnormal AI not because it sounds modern—but because it better communicates the mission we’ve been on since day one. A mission to protect people from the most advanced threats in the world, using the most advanced technology available.

Thanks for being part of this journey as we do what we do best—utilizing AI to protect humans everywhere they operate and interact. I can’t wait to show you what’s coming next.
