Meet Pranav Singh, Senior Software Engineer

Pranav Singh transforms how customers understand their security impact, building self-serve analytics tools that help customers and internal teams quantify Abnormal's value. We spoke with Pranav about his technical leadership journey and how AI has reshaped his approach to engineering.

Building Intelligence Into Security Analytics

Pranav's role sits at the intersection of engineering and customer value. He architects scalable systems, improves reliability and performance, and integrates AI-driven reporting solutions that help teams understand real security impact.

"I work as a Technical Lead on the Business Value Analysis team, where we develop self-serve analytics tools that help customers and internal teams quantify Abnormal's security impact," Pranav explains.

His work involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams, particularly the AI team, to enable real-time insights and dynamic report generation. The goal remains clear: help customers see the tangible value of their security investment.

From Static Reports to AI-Powered Insights

The most interesting technical challenge Pranav tackled recently involved completely reimagining how customers receive security intelligence. The old system relied on hardcoded templates and QueryLib, making it rigid and unable to support real-time insights.

"I led the redesign by introducing a centralized slide repository, which allowed AI to intelligently select slides and populate data dynamically," he notes.

The team also migrated to an event-driven Kafka pipeline, which decoupled report hydration and improved scalability. The result was a flexible, AI-driven reporting system that provides personalized, data-rich insights to customers.

The transformation required thinking beyond traditional engineering approaches. Instead of relying on strict, rule-based logic, the new system embraces a more flexible, probabilistic approach that constantly tests, refines, and adapts.

"One of my biggest 'aha moments' was realizing how much AI can accelerate problem-solving and decision-making. Instead of manually debugging complex issues or spending hours refining a design, AI tools can quickly surface insights and suggest optimizations I hadn't considered."

How AI Changed Everything

Working with AI has fundamentally changed how Pranav approaches engineering problems. The shift goes beyond faster coding to reimagining how problems get solved.

"Instead of relying on strict, rule-based logic, I've learned to embrace a more flexible, probabilistic approach, constantly testing, refining, and adapting," he explains.

AI has made him more automation-driven, helping him debug faster, refactor smarter, and accelerate development. He has developed prompt engineering skills and uses tools like ChatGPT, Cursor, and Copilot to explore design ideas faster and optimize systems more effectively.

The transformation touches every aspect of his work. From orchestrating the right tools to maximize efficiency and creativity to rethinking engineering as more than just writing code.

A Day in the Engineering Life

Pranav's typical day reflects the global, collaborative nature of engineering at Abnormal. About half his time spreads across the day due to collaboration with teams around the globe.

"About 50% of my time is spent writing and reviewing code, focusing on system improvements, backend optimizations, and integrations," he describes. "The rest is split between design discussions, mentoring engineers, and working with AI-driven tools to enhance report generation."

He also spends time debugging production issues, refining feature specifications, and aligning with stakeholders. The variety keeps work engaging while ensuring systems remain reliable and performant.

"The balance between speed while ensuring quality and excellence is probably the most valuable lesson I am learning."

Ownership and Velocity in Action

The engineering culture at Abnormal stands out for its emphasis on ownership and velocity. Engineers are trusted to take full responsibility for their work, from design to deployment.

"Velocity is not just about moving fast. It's about iterative development with a crawl-walk-run mindset, allowing us to experiment, learn, and refine continuously," Pranav explains.

What might surprise people is how much autonomy engineers have to drive impactful changes while maintaining balance between speed and long-term scalability.

The trust placed in engineers from day one creates an environment where people can own projects, make important decisions, and directly shape products. The fast-paced, hands-on culture pushes people to take initiative, learn by doing, and grow quickly while tackling real challenges.

Growth Through Technical Leadership

Pranav's journey at Abnormal has been a significant growth experience. He started as an individual contributor and evolved into a tech lead, taking on bigger challenges, leading key projects, and mentoring others.

"Stepping into this role has pushed me to think more strategically, collaborate across teams, and drive impactful decisions," he notes.

Looking ahead, he wants to continue refining his leadership skills and help shape the team's future. The environment provides opportunities to grow through taking ownership, moving fast, and embracing ambiguity.

The Future of AI in Cybersecurity

Pranav sees AI transforming cybersecurity by moving from rule-based automation to intelligent decision-making. The technology enables real-time anomaly detection, proactive threat analysis, and automated risk assessments.

"My role in this transformation is to bridge AI capabilities with engineering best practices, ensuring the infrastructure supporting AI-driven decisions is fast, trustworthy, and effective," he explains.

By integrating AI into Business Value Analysis, he has helped make reporting more insightful and interactive, empowering customers with better security intelligence.

Staying Connected Across Time Zones

Remote connection requires intentional effort. Pranav makes it a point to check in regularly, whether through team standups, async updates, or quick calls when needed.

"Beyond work, I stay engaged through casual chats and celebrating wins together. It makes a big difference," he says. "Sharing progress, asking for feedback, and supporting teammates helps maintain that sense of team, even from a distance."
