AI Japanese Translator
CJ Cunniff, on Abnormal's marketing operations team, built the AI Japanese Translator: an automated workflow that uses Claude to translate Japanese-language form submissions flowing through Marketo before they reach Salesforce. What started as a persistent pain point for the international team is now a hands-off, hourly batch process.

A Week Lost in Translation
When a prospect in Japan submitted a form, their job title, company name, and country arrived in double-byte Japanese characters. Marketo's downstream logic relies on English-language matching to assign lead tiers, and those Japanese entries didn't match anything.
- Non-English characters in key fields broke Marketo's tiering rules, leaving leads unrouted and unscored until someone intervened manually.
- The workaround was sending batches to a human translation service, which added roughly a week of delay before leads could be loaded into Salesforce.
- That translation service costs thousands of dollars every month, with no scalable alternative on the table.
Compressed timelines always favor the vendor, not Abnormal. Every week of delay was a week the international sales team couldn't act on fresh leads.
Claude Reads, Translates, Writes Back
The AI Japanese Translator works by flagging incoming Marketo leads from countries with non-English primary languages. Claude picks up flagged records in an hourly batch, inspects the title, company, and country fields, and translates only those that contain non-English characters. English entries pass through untouched.
Detects non-English characters across the title, company, and country fields automatically
Translates Japanese to English with native-speaker-validated accuracy
Runs on an hourly batch cycle instead of weekly manual handoffs
Leaves English-language submissions untouched to avoid unnecessary processing
Generates an Excel audit report, preserving original and translated values for revert capability
The audit trail is a small but important detail. Nothing is permanently overwritten. If a translation ever needs revisiting, the original submission is one spreadsheet column away.
Faster Leads, Lower Costs
The numbers tell the story clearly. CJ's team estimates the new workflow is 168 times faster than the previous process, and the cost dropped from thousands of dollars per month to effectively zero.
- Lead processing time dropped from approximately one week to hourly batches
- Monthly translation spend went from thousands of dollars to near-zero
- Zero failed translations across production test runs
- Built-in audit trail satisfies compliance requirements without extra tooling
For the international marketing ops team, this means leads are routed and scored within hours of submission, rather than sitting in a queue. For finance and leadership, it eliminates a recurring line item that scaled with volume and had no ceiling.
The next step is already in motion: CJ is working with Zach Crouthamel's engineering team to move the batch job off a local laptop and into a server-scheduled production environment.
Stakeholders Hyped Up
Two primary stakeholders on the international operations side shared feedback the day before the demo, confirming they're already seeing cleaned data flowing through the system. The speed and accuracy removed a friction point that they had been managing manually for months.
The translator represents a pattern gaining momentum at Abnormal: non-engineering teams building production-grade AI workflows that directly cut operational cost. CJ's marketing ops group plans to bring new demos weekly, and the engineering team is working to productionize these batch automations so they run independently of any one person's laptop.
Problem
Japanese-form submissions broke Marketo/Salesforce matching logic, requiring manual translation that cost thousands per month and delayed lead processing by a week.
Solution
AI Japanese Translator uses Claude to batch-translate non-English Marketo lead fields hourly, writing cleaned data back to Salesforce automatically.
Why it's Cool
It replaced a week-long, expensive manual translation loop with hourly automated batches at near-zero cost, validated as spot-on by native speakers.
